Help with Markling

Markling edits ordinary Markdown files. No separate Markling account is required. An Apple Account is used for the Mac trial, unlock, and purchase restoration.

Prices and the Mac trial

Markling is free on iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro. Android core editing remains free; see the upcoming Android Pro plan below. On Mac, download free from the Mac App Store and choose a 14-day full trial. Continue with a one-time unlock for €14.99 (US$14.99 in the United States). Prices in other storefronts may vary; Apple shows the applicable price before you confirm. There is no subscription or automatic charge when the trial ends.

The Mac trial starts when you complete the free 14-day Trial activation in the app. It lasts 14 consecutive days from the original trial activation. After it ends, you can still open, read, copy, export and print documents, and save outstanding edits with Save or Save As. Creating documents or making further edits requires the one-time unlock. The trial does not renew or become a paid purchase automatically. Your documents remain your files and are not deleted when the trial ends.

Restore Mac access

Use Restore Purchases in the Mac app while signed in to the Apple Account used for the purchase. An internet connection may be needed to verify or restore access. Restoring the trial keeps its original end date; it does not start another 14 days. If a purchase is refunded or revoked, it no longer grants the unlock.

If access cannot be verified, connect to the internet, confirm the Mac App Store is signed in to the correct Apple Account, and choose Restore Purchases. For further steps, see Apple's purchase restoration guidance. Contact Markling support if access is still missing; do not send payment-card details or your Apple Account password.

Apple purchase refunds

You can request a refund for an Apple-billed purchase at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides eligibility under its terms and applicable consumer law. See Apple's refund instructions.

Android Pro

Android Pro is available as a one-time Google Play purchase for PDF export, printing and self-contained HTML. Core Markdown editing remains free. Google Play shows the current localized price before confirmation. There is no Android subscription or trial. Editable Word (DOCX) export is planned for a later Android update.

Opening, reading, editing and saving ordinary Markdown files, Preview, Split view, outline, find and replace, and line numbers remain unlimited and free. Core editing does not require a purchase or separate Markling account.

When Pro becomes available, use Restore Purchases with the Google Play account used to buy it after reinstalling or on another Android device. Buying and restoring need Google Play and may require a connection. A previously verified purchase can work offline while Google Play is temporarily unavailable. Pending payments do not unlock Pro; a successful check removes access for refunded or revoked purchases. Your source documents and free editing remain accessible.

For payment or refund questions, see Google Play refund policies. Do not send payment-card details or your Google Account password to Markling support. A Mac unlock and Android Pro are separate store purchases.

Open a document or folder

Use the system file picker or Open With from a file manager. Markling supports Markdown extensions .md, .markdown, .mdown, and .mkd. Apple file pickers also allow compatible plain-text files. Files must use UTF-8 and be no larger than 16 MiB. Make sure a cloud provider has downloaded the file and granted access.

Save your writing

On Mac, choose File → Save or press Command-S. Save As writes your current contents to a chosen file and continues editing it. Mobile documents save changes in place when their provider allows writing. If access fails, keep the app open and use an available save/export action to preserve your work. Android can offer recovery of unsaved changes after a restart.

Writing and library tools — upcoming update

The next update is being prepared for testing. The following tools may not appear in your current store version; platform integrations and limits can differ. Open a folder workspace to search filenames, text and headings, filter by folder, browse favorites, or create, rename and move Markdown files. Apple uses its workspace sidebar and Quick Open; Android uses the workspace screen or drawer. Large or unavailable files can have filename-only search with an indexing notice. Refresh after another app changes a file.

Use Insert or Commands and Insert for templates, snippets, a visual table editor, document properties, images and links to other workspace documents. In the upcoming update, Choose from Photos opens the system photo picker; you can also choose an image file or paste an image. Image insertion embeds the image in the Markdown document by default, without requiring access to its containing folder. To keep images as separate files, choose the optional storage beside the document; this requires a saved document and access to its containing folder and writes images into an adjacent assets folder. Embedded images count toward the 16 MiB document limit; use the image-size optimization option or a smaller image if needed. Table controls accept spreadsheet cells and return Markdown. Property editing supports simple top-level YAML values while preserving unfamiliar source. Link and backlink views inspect the opened workspace. When moving a file, supported link updates can skip open, changed or inaccessible documents; review any reported failures.

Settings adds typography presets, font family, line height, paragraph spacing, readable column width and formatting-toolbar customization. Writing Tools adds goals, reading-time estimates and a separate folded writing view; collapsing content does not remove its source. Sentence/paragraph focus and typewriter scrolling apply to the source editor. English, Bulgarian and Arabic interface resources are included; document text, filenames, user templates and system/provider messages are not translated automatically.

Document History — upcoming update

Open Document History from the editor menu to inspect timestamped local snapshots, compare changes, save a snapshot manually or Restore as Copy. A restored copy does not replace the file you are editing. Markling keeps up to 30 snapshots per document within a shared 64 MiB local history limit and removes older snapshots when needed. History stays on this device and is not a backup or cloud-sync service.

Use Clear This Document’s History (Clear history on Android) in that document's history view to remove its snapshots. The original, restored/exported copies and unsaved recovery are separate. Later editing can add new snapshots. Removing the original file or a Recent Files entry does not clear its local history. Save or export wanted versions before removing app data.

Quick Capture — upcoming update

Share selected text, a URL or images to Markling, or use the Quick Capture action, then choose a new Markdown file or append to an existing one. Apple provides Shortcuts/native capture actions and iOS/macOS share extensions; Android accepts system shares and provides an app-icon shortcut. The sender controls which title, URL and content are supplied; Markling does not scrape arbitrary web pages. Choose the destination again if a saved folder grant is unavailable.

Apple share capture authenticates each time; on Mac the main app confirms saving and requires current editing access. The document size limit remains 16 MiB. Images saved by Quick Capture are ordinary adjacent files, so deleting a Markdown document does not automatically remove its assets. Read the privacy policy for temporary Mac capture transfers and retained drafts.

App lock and hidden previews — upcoming update

Enable app lock in Settings → Privacy to require the device's supported biometric or credential authentication when returning to Markling. Inactive-window/recent-app preview protection can hide document content; Android also offers screenshot protection. If authentication is unavailable, use the device's security settings or supported credential fallback. These controls do not encrypt your Markdown, assets, history or exports and do not prevent access through other authorized file apps.

DOCX and export layout — upcoming update

Export Options offers presets, typography, margins, header/footer text, contents and supported page numbering, with remembered document/folder choices. Its sample is a style preview; actual page breaks and page furniture depend on the output format and platform print engine.

Export as Word creates a DOCX file containing editable supported text, headings, links, lists and tables. Images appear as alternative text and source locations; diagrams, formulas and authored HTML use readable source fallbacks. DOCX is not a lossless Markdown copy and has simpler handling of complex source. Use PDF or standalone HTML for supported rendered graphics, and inspect the exported result before sharing. There is no ePub exporter.

Preview reading and editing

In the next editor update, Preview is read-only by default, including its pane in Split. Ordinary taps and clicks follow hyperlinks and document anchors without changing text or tasks. To edit there, enable Allow Editing in Preview in Settings. Select text to reveal the Markdown around it; Return inserts a newline and Escape keeps your changes. Source and Preview share Undo/Redo, with visible buttons as well as keyboard shortcuts.

These changes are being prepared for testing. Earlier releases allow Preview editing by default. While Preview editing is enabled, use Open Link from the context menu, or Command-click on Mac, to follow a link.

Word and character counts

The next editor update uses the same readable-content totals in Edit, Preview and Split. Spaces and code content count; Markdown markers, link destinations and line breaks do not. For example, ## Test is 1 word · 4 characters. These are writing statistics, not the raw source length or file size.

Editor layout and Focus Mode

Line numbers and Word Wrap, where offered, configure the source editor. The next update removes these editor-only options from Preview-only view controls while keeping Split scrolling synchronized across different wrapping. Focus Mode keeps a visible exit control so you can restore document controls and close the file, including files opened from Recent Files.

Split view and outline

Phones and narrow windows show Edit or Preview. Make a tablet, Mac, or Vision Pro window wider to use Split. Open Outline to jump to headings. The outline appears as a sheet or sidebar depending on the space available.

Diagrams, math, and images

Use fenced blocks labeled mermaid for diagrams or math, latex, or katex for math. Use $…$ for inline math. Display math uses opening and closing $$ on separate lines around the formula; $$formula$$ on one line is not the supported display form. Escape a prose dollar sign as \$. Math delimiters inside code, links, HTML and front matter remain source text.

Bundled diagram and math rendering works offline. Remote images require a working HTTPS address; plain HTTP images are blocked. File-provider permissions can prevent access to nearby local images. A rendering failure keeps readable source where possible.

Footnotes

Add a reference such as [^note] and a top-level definition such as [^note]: Your note.. Indent continuation lines or paragraphs with four spaces or a tab. Numbering follows the first reference, and repeated references reuse the same number. Undefined references and references nested inside another footnote remain literal source.

Editable Preview keeps definitions where you wrote them. HTML and PDF export collect referenced definitions into numbered endnotes; HTML also provides return links. Unused or duplicate definitions do not add exported endnotes. Some nested content has Preview limits: Apple footnote and math-table bodies block external and file images and show nested Mermaid fences as code; Android math/footnote table islands retain image Markdown as readable source. Ordinary top-level images and Mermaid diagrams are unaffected, and export handles supported images and diagrams separately.

Export and print

On Android, PDF export, printing and self-contained HTML require the optional Pro unlock; ordinary Markdown saving stays free. Editable Word (DOCX) export is planned for a later Android update. Older versions may have different export options.

The export menu offers PDF, standalone HTML and system printing. On Android, both Export PDF and Print open the system print destination selector. Choose Save as PDF to create a file, adjust the paper size and page selection if needed, then choose a file location in the system picker. Android produces the PDF with searchable text and vector diagrams.

Supported Mermaid diagrams and math render in the output, and referenced footnotes become endnotes. HTML embeds the bundled renderers and math fonts, so it needs no CDN or companion folder. PDF and print prepare permitted local and HTTPS images before pagination; unavailable or invalid images use a readable fallback such as their alternative text.

Standalone HTML retains document HTML under a restrictive content policy that blocks authored scripts and arbitrary frames. Review links in documents from others before following them. PDF output retains its rendered content without JavaScript. Layout, styling and page breaks can differ from Preview and between platforms, so inspect exported files before sharing.

Rendering failures can leave readable source where possible. Missing rendering resources, large documents or images, cancellation, or timeouts can instead stop export with an explanation; your source document remains unchanged. Android PDF preparation accepts at most 4 MB of Markdown, which is smaller than the file-opening limit. Before opening the print selector, Markling checks the rendered document height against a bound of approximately 500 pages at the default Letter layout. This is a preparation limit; Android determines the final page count from your selected paper size and print settings. If a large export fails, reduce document or image size and try again, or try standalone HTML.

Recent Files and deletion

Remove, Clear, and Off affect Markling’s recent-file history, not the documents. Delete documents in Files, Finder, or the Android file provider where you saved them. Read the privacy policy for local data and recovery retention.
